Day 2 / Austin to New Orleans ride May 17 2015

From Phil: After all the rain and the end of Day 1’s ride we decide to check-in to a hotel so the girls could shower and sleep in a warm bed.  We woke up in the morning refreshed with the sun shining. The day ahead was looking up. Weather was warm and steamy as the water dried up. Today I split up from the girls as they went east. I drove down into Houston to visit one of our top dealers. Fletcher Bike Studio carries a full inventory of our Bmx brands along with Sunday and Fairdale completes. This core Bmx shop is a strong supporter of the freestyle scene in Houston and you can count on them for high quality products. The two-man crew running the whole shop, Emmit and Kevin, are super nice and hospitable people. Glad to have such a great shop representing us. From Liz: Today the major hurdles were the rolling hills and Texas heat. It seemed that every break we got on a down hill was equally matched with an uphill on the other side. Phil was in Houston most of the day today so we were on our own. We passed through Bryan, Texas at around mile 25, just outside of College Station. The toughest part of the day was on a long stretch of TX 30. It seemed to be never ending, with very little shade to protect us from the sun. At one point our route took us down 3 miles of dirt road. We saw many vast pastures and stopped to take in the scenery. It certainly lifted our spirits after such a long day. The last 20 miles of our day we entered into thick forrest, filled with humongous pine trees. The steep hills eased up and we seemed to get some downhill momentum. Once we saw the sign for the park we knew our destination had to be close! We ended up doing 77.8 miles today. 2 days down! From Phil: After Houston I drove back up to where the girls were. I parked the van and rode back to meet them. I wanted to grab some photos of the lush scenery. We are all really tired. I couldn’t start the fire and we ended up just eating pb&js for dinner.

Day 1 / Austin to New Orleans ride May 16 2015

If you happened to work in a bike shop and have ever ordered a Fairdale there’s a good chance you spoke with Phil Bailey. He works at our in house distributor Full Factory Distro. Over the next 8 days or so he is leading a bike ride from Austin to New Orleans. Liz Mckibbon and Emily Ermer will be doing the pedaling while Phil drives the Fairdale van as a support vehicle. Having a support vehicle is such a rad addition to a trip like this. Someone who can carry the food and camping gear and of course be there if anything should go wrong. Also, Phil will be able to race ahead and visit some bike shops along the way spreading Fairdale, Sunday Bikes, Odyssey and G-sport everywhere he goes! Phil sent us this update: Day 1, Austin to Caldwell, TX. Liz and Emily are riding from Austin to New Orleans. I am driving the Fairdale van as a support vehicle, carrying all of our camping equipment and supplies. I will also be taking photos to document the trip. The personal primary goal of the trip is the challenge of completing such a long journey and also experiencing nature through Texas and Louisiana. The other half of my goal is to stop in to bike shops in local towns to endorse Fairdale and visit some of our existing dealers.     We also wanted to show that Fairdale bikes were made to go on an adventure. Bikes that can take you from paved roads to gravel roads through the rain and shine. Just the first day alone riding through the rain the disc brakes came in so handy. A part of the trail became bumpy with potholes, gravel roads and even puddles of water. The bigger tires really came in handy when the riders had to ride through some mud, gravel or even through a few inches of water. The weekender has proven to be a good bike for a beginner to even the most seasoned rider. Emily is a less experienced rider and found the weekender to be an easy-to-ride bike for a not-so-easy journey. Liz is enjoying all the perks of her weekender after coming off of a more road specific bike.     Some words from Liz: The day was chock full of rain. At some points the wind was blowing us so hard I thought we would fall over. We did get a few moments of sunshine in the last hour or so. I don’t mind the rain so much outside of the added danger from cars and slippery roads. Outside of near nonstop rain, the Texas countryside is absolutely beautiful. Wildflowers are in bloom everywhere. We saw a good bit of cattle along the way and even some long horns. The route we took was incredibly rural. It was strange that at times we wouldn’t see a single car for 15 minutes or longer. At one point we were practically off-roading through a rocky dirt road […]

Jed and Amy ride the Fairdale Weekender May 06 2015

Jed and Amy ride the Fairdale Weekender. Cruise, commute, tour, or just go for a bike ride. The Weekender (shown with Drop bars) is a great bike for just about anything you might have in mind. The 10-speed drivetrain is an absolute joy to ride; just one easy shift lever gives you a full range of gears. Enjoyable simplification for beginner to expert riders. The X7 clutch derailleur quiets down derailleur flop and gives the bike a wonderfully solid ride quality. SRAM levers work perfectly with the BB7 Road disc brakes to provide confident all weather braking. Flat-protected tires will keep you rolling and Electro Silver will keep you stoked to be on board. We REALLY love this bike and we think you will too. Also available with our more relaxed Archer 2 handlebars or as a frame set.

The Taj has a Potts Mod April 24 2015

One of the features on the Taj bike is that it has a Potts Mod. This early 80’s BMX innovation can sometimes be confusing to younger riders and mechanics who weren’t even alive back when this doo-dad was popular. Essentially the Potts Mod is just a way to route your front brake cable through your fork’s steer tube. It comes out the bottom of the steer tube and heads to this cable guide here. Then the cable loops around and goes right into the brake thanks to some handy adapter hardware. It’s a cool way to keep that cable out of the way and also keeps that BMX cruiser look.
