Fairdale Rockitship April 12 2017

UDPATE: The Rockitship has launched! It’s available now as a Frame+Fork kit. We’re excited to show you the Fairdale Rockitship. Shortly after launching the Goodship in 2014, we began getting requests for a version that would accommodate racks, fenders, and bigger tires. At our design office, we have to juggle our time between a lot of different projects so we decided to let the idea sit for a while, both so we could think about it, and also because we could see that options for disc brakes and 1x drivetrains were continuing to grow at a rapid pace. Roughly one year ago, we began drawing the Rockitship with the same Drawnright 4130 chromoly tubeset used on the Goodship, but making it with rack-ready 12mm thru-axle dropouts and flat mount disc brakes. While we obviously wanted to use the bike for touring around and going off-road, we didn’t want to go “full” mountain bike with this one, so we designed it around working with an ENVE CX fork. This means that we have a 1-1/2” to 1-1/8” headtube and lots of clearance up front. The frame will comfortably fit tires up to 41mm/1.6 inches wide, which allows it to work with either a 2x or 1x drivetrain, while also maintaining a shorter chainstay length. We are currently working on a complete bike, but if we can’t hit our pricing goals, then the Rockitship will be available as a frame and fork kit. Testing duties for the first prototype went to Leif Valin (his bike is pictured here), and we asked him to write up some thoughts on the bike: The Fairdale Rockitship uses custom butted, heat-treated Drawnright tubing that is ED (epoxy) coated inside for excellent corrosion protection. It allows for excellent durability and a smooth ride feel. It’s a strong bike, but it’s still light enough to race to the finish-line or to the campsite. Spec’d with a 142×12 thru-axle dropout with the mounting ability to use a rack, the Rockitship is able to use a variety of up-to-date hub and wheel choices, while maintaining some utilitarian versatility. The three bottle mounts, plus a low seat tube bottle mount for maximum frame bag clearance, allows you to bring along plenty of hydration. When run with a tubeless rim, orange seal sealant, and a 40c tire (like the Maxxis Rambler) your possibilities for exploring are close to being maximized. The lower tire pressure and added traction allows for a smooth and efficient ride. It lets you take routes that normally would’ve left you with flats and jiggled up internal organs. The Rockitship will definitely help you find your way to funtown, whether the road there is paved or dirt. – Leif Valin GEOMETRY & INFO Size: 58cm Top Tube Length Effective: 580mm Top Tube Length Actual: 560 Seat Tube (BB Center-to-Top): 550mm Seat Tube Angle: 73° Head Tube Length: 175mm Head Tube Angle: 72.5° Chain Stay Length: 430mm Wheelbase: 1037mm Stack: 600mm Reach: 396mm Fork Length: 395mm Fork Offset: 47mm BB […]

The Spaceship February 14 2017

UDPATE: The Spaceship has landed! It’s available now as a Frame+Fork kit. In the fall of 2016 Fairdale had an opportunity to make road frames using custom drawn 3/2.5 titanium tube sets. Our initial thought was that it seemed like a fun R&D project to tackle, but that in the long run it probably wasn’t going to be very practical for Fairdale or our customers. Titanium is a great material for high-performance bike frames, but the added cost is usually hard for us to justify over chromoly or aluminum when it comes time for production. However, since this would end up as very limited edition project, or maybe never even leave the prototype stages, we decide to go for it, knowing that it would still be an awesome learning experience. We started with the Goodship’s proven road geometry and modified the tubing shape and sizes for titanium. The frame was designed to be paired with an Enve 2.0 fork with the 1-1/4” tapered steerer tube, both for the increased strength, and the smoother transitions from the fork crown to the lower head tube, and upward to the headset cap on top. Since we didn’t have a long list of the usual constraints, we designed this frame to be dedicated for use with electronic groupsets. We had never used them on our own bikes before, and this seemed like the right time to finally test them out for ourselves. In the past we had always talked about some of the higher-end bikes being like “spaceships”, so using that term for the project’s code name was a given to us. When it came time to name the bike officially, the Spaceship moniker had morphed into more of a term of endearment and it stuck. With help from Shimano, FSA and Enve, the Spaceship build came together quickly and the end result is a bike that is a lot of fun to ride and great to look at too. Will the Spaceship ever go to production? It’s hard to say. If there’s enough interest, then maybe we’ll consider it! The price for the frame and fork would probably end up between $2-2500, and we could offer versions that will work with traditional mechanical groupsets as well. The Spaceship was a great development exercise for us and we hope you enjoy looking at it at as much as we enjoy riding it. Please let us know what you think. Thanks! Builds: Surf Blue Goodship February 03 2017

In this video, Leif builds up a Surf Blue Goodship with a little help from some friends and a bunny. The bike turned out looking nice with the matching purple grip tape and water-bottle cages. Goodship Frame+Fork Kit The Goodship is Fairdale’s top-of-the-line steel road bike. We set out to design a bike with race-inspired geometry that still retained Fairdale sensibilities. The bike is a mix of some tried and true technologies that have been paired up with some of the most modern manufacturing techniques and resources available. One of the things we are most excited about is that the frame will be made using our seamless, Japanese, Drawnright tubeset. It’s a unique opportunity to have complete control over the butting, shape and size of each tube. Every Drawnright tubeset is also heat-treated to precise tolerances to further improve their strength and ride quality. The end result is a completely custom, high-quality 4130 chromoly tubeset that is specific to each size of the frame. Paired with an Enve carbon fiber fork this kit is ready to be spec’d and customized to your liking! Available in Surf Blue, Orange, or Electric Blue.
