We’re always thinking about how everyone can enjoy bikes… we mean “everyone”! …. it’d most likely be while riding a bike. Alternatives to drinking.

Our Swan Badge October 09 2015

Searching through some old drawing books I found some original sketches for our Swan badge. Fairdale is 5 years old now and we’ve done lots of growing and changing since then. One item that has stayed consistent is our headtube badge. It was really important for us to get it right the first time. Once we embossed that first badge we hoped to be able to keep it unchanged for many years. Outside of toying with a few colors we’ve kept it untouched and are very happy with it. This is one of the first sketches I could find and I’m already sure about using wings in the logo. Of course wings in logos is nothing new. For Fairdale I really wanted to represent the idea that bikes can take you places you otherwise wouldn’t go. Even if it’s as mundane as riding the same route you normally drive to work… seen from a bicycle, the world opens up. The idea to incorporate “F” into the design took a lot of figuring out. I do remember being stuck on this idea that our bird should have a sprocket as a halo. I thought it looked very classic. I kept trying and re-trying to make the halo work. And at the same time started to focus in on the general shape of the “F” in the bird (which about here had become a white swan to me). Fairdale was really lucky to have Jim Bauer and Chris Cotsonas an email and desk away from me during this phase of design. They helped hone the idea down into a cleaner and more focused icon. I eventually decided (with some prodding) that the halo was both a little unclear and touching on some possible religious territory. We got the feathers almost right on the version with the Texas Capitol building, and we found a new way to keep my sprocket in the logo too. And finally we finished our first version of the badge (which ended up being chrome not gold).  This is the modern day badge you’ll find on your Fairdale.  And of course the Swan has been used on many of our soft goods and stickers.

Leif rides the Dolores 100 October 08 2015

Our team rider Leif  just rode the very exclusive Dolores 100 self-supported mountain bike adventure. The race centered around Dolores, CO and included about 9 billion feet of climbing. He did the ride with his girlfriend (Jonesy Pants) in 12 hours and 20 minutes. Somehow they had energy after the race to stop and do some more riding on the way home in Kenosha Pass and at a friend’s place in Durango. Read more to see some of the wilderness few people get to ride.

New Coaster October 08 2015

Back by popular demand the Coaster returns in this Battleship Gray colorway. Always one of our favorite bikes, we’re glad to see the Coaster make it back into the line. Retailing at $459 the Coaster is a quality choice above a sea of run-of-the-mill fixies. Chromoly cranks are strong enough to last a lifetime. An upgraded Rust-Buster chain is something that you won’t have to think much about and that’s a good thing! A sealed cartridge bearing press fit BB is unheard of at this price-point. You’ll appreciate it in the long run for its durability and smoothness. Stable and comfortable Archer 2 bars, standard front brake and real Shimano® coaster brake at the rear make this incredibly simple bike a joy to ride.  “Keepin’ it Simple Keeps it fun” is the motto of the Coaster and one we believe in. After all, that is part of what makes riding bikes great… it’s fun because it is simple. The Coaster has a way of winning over the most jaded bike snobs with it’s lovable ride. It’s durable parts will keep it working too.  Room for fenders and rack mounts make the Coaster adaptable.  The new Coaster is available now! Driver-less Bicycle and half a decade of innovation October 07 2015

With e-bikes blurring the lines between bicycles and motorcycles we thought that maybe we are approaching automated cycling from the wrong direction. Perhaps the problem with bicycles is not the pedaling so much as it is the steering. Our Robotic Bike Driver® easily attaches to your tandems driver’s seat-post and will take care of all steering duties. In fact it is actually an updated solution for our previously Probably Going to Patent design for the Lonely Tandem Handlebars. Click on to see more of our ground breaking designs through the years. The Lonely Tandem Handlebars were designed to make (for the first time) riding a tandem possible when alone.  Making the handlebars were a simple act of applying brain power to solve a complicated problem.   We revolutionized the dog-packing world with our simple to use Corgi-Bicycle-Hold-All. Not only will this easily carry your dog on your bicycle but we’ve also been experimenting with carrying extra cargo inside the dog itself. This back saving device was created when Taj was having back issues preventing him from riding. This rear axle mounted carbon fiber rod comfortably reduces all weight from the rider’s lumbar area. For BMX riders nose-wheelies are the essential trick of the era. Our axle peg mounted Nose-wheelie Helpers made learning to balance on the front wheel a snap. We were kind of blown away when Sam here actually made a pair! Always trying to stay true to our BMX roots we designed this roof-rack to fit “Adult” bicycles. This simple advancement makes getting your little bike to the skatepark easy. The BMX-to-Unicycle adapter was designed to make riding BMX more difficult. Our Spring-Loaded manhole cover design did not so much help the cycling world as to make it more entertaining for bored spectators.  We also quickly adopted its technology to work on pedestrians. Our Land Speed record breaking (attempt) bikes became a reality in our R+D Video. Here are the full plans incase you would like to make one yourself.
